Background
All construction projects generate surplus soil. In many cases, soil is considered ‘waste’ that needed to be removed. Managing waste has been come more difficult, partly because of tightening of environmental legislation. The industry has also been waiting for new new guidance such as DOWCOP Version 3 and the Construction Code of Practice for the Sustainable Use of Soilson Construction Sites for a while.

This conference explored issues that construction professionals have in managing soil from construction projects in the past 12 months. This included how well they have been complying with waste regulations and how to use soil in project to meet wider environmental agenda. It also presented CIRIA new soil community of practice portal and Soil Community of Practice Year 2 activities.
